Latin name: Varanus panoptes
Native Home: Argus Monitors are a monitor lizard found in northern regions of Australia and southern New Guinea. It is also commonly known as the yellow-spotted monitor.
Size: Adult males often reaching a total length of 4½ to 5 feet. Females typically remain about 3½ feet maximum total length.
Diet: Argus Monitors feed on insects such as crickets or super worms, pre-killed and thawed mice of the proper size, day-old chicks, fish, crayfish.
Reproduction: Argus Monitors are actually one of the few documented species to have parthenogenetic eggs hatch. This is a genetic miscue versus adaptation, where the female provides two sets of chromosomes to the eggs, allowing them to develop and hatch.
Lifespan: Argus monitors can live 15 to 20 years in captivity.
